TOWARDS A HEALTHY DIGITAL ECOSYSTEM
Workshop 7, Summary
Ingo Leipner, journalist and co- author of the books: "Die Lüge der digitalen Bildung" (the lie of digital education) and "Heute mal bildschirmfrei" (Today let's be screen-free), gave an introduction about healthy media-education. His first thesis was: "A childhood without computers is the best point of entry into the digital age". It means that children need a "digital free oasis" during their pre-school and elementary school years to ensure healthy body and soul development. There is plenty of scientific evidence to show that without it many important human capacities remain undeveloped – orientation in space and real time, attentiveness and memory, impulse control, the ability to wait, tolerance and social skills like listening and empathy. This "indirect media education" (Edwin Hübner) is the foundation for direct media education later on, e.g. coding, videos or texts for websites.
Why cannot a school be a media-free zone for children up to the age of 14 Years? When they are at home or out the kids have more than enough media exposure. They need to learn how to communicate with people in real life.
There then followed a discussion and commentary. All the media critical concerns were clear to people. … It is not a question of whether we should protect our children, but how? Adults must become role models and show that the smart phone is not the most important thing of the world....
How can we bring all these concerns to the wider public? There are so many powerful commercial interests behind the move towards the digitalisation of early childhood ! We agreed to communicate further about all this and prepare for a Europe wide campaign.
