Summary – Opening Speech
held by Dr. Michaela Glöckler
Following the contribution of Sophie Beernaerts Michaela Glöckler, President of Alliance ELIANT, shared inspiring words on the topic of variety in Europe and the role of citizens in protecting the European values and cultural diversity.
Mrs. Glöckler began her speech saying that the social, educational and medical fields can enhance each other, as “only healthy people are able to see those who are truly suffering, because only they know what the others are really missing”.
She continued with emphasizing the importance of solidarity and tolerance toward people in need, together with the necessity to humanize our activities, while not forgetting our dignity. Overcoming polarizations, which work against the welfare and empowerment of people, is imperative and can happen when every European citizen takes an individual responsibility to expand the idea of human rights. Mrs. Glöckler noted how important it is to work together in the future, first by applying these values in our daily lives and second by trying to develop collective concepts, based on compassion and humanity, in order to find ways to over-bridge the gap between ideals and reality, which currently exists in the minds of many European citizens. Michaela Glöckler underlined that variety and availability of choice in Europe should be protected, as due to their quality minorities are valuable and highly contributive to the European culture. Currently, the freedom of choice on the continent is endangered, due to strict regulations limiting certain types of production. Mrs. Glöckler gave an illustrative example with the case of DEMETER’s baby food, which has to be fortified by synthetic Vitamin B1, otherwise it would no longer be available on the European market.
Citizens need to stand behind their right of having variety of choices in all fields, as this alone is a core human right, reminded us the president of Alliance ELIANT. She further shared how she sees the need to create a new initiative of active citizens, NGOs and civil actors, who together can work as united conversation partners to authorities in the fields of social and economic activities in the EU. Mrs. Glöckler concluded her strong speech by expressing gratefulness to all participants in the conference and encouraging them to work together for developing common ideas for a better European future.
