Integrative medicine – health for body, life, soul and spirit

The current challenges in health care require joint action by doctors, medicine manufacturers and patients, an endeavour which ELIANT supports throughout Europe. Increasing numbers of people want the more "gentle" process-oriented healing approaches of complementary and integrated medicine in addition to conventional medicine – regardless of whether Europe has a satisfactory legal framework for it.

Anthroposophic medicine is a form of integrated medicine that brings together the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches of conventional medicine with the philosophical and spiritual knowledge of anthroposophy. Since it was founded in 1921 it has spread to over 80 countries. The spectrum of applied medicine used by licensed doctors also includes – in addition to the tried and tested methods of conventional medicine – a broad range of natural medicines that awaken the self-healing powers of the organism itself, as well as external applications and special medical massages, artistic therapies, eurythmy therapy, life coaching and biographical counselling, if needed.

Anthroposophic hospitals are well known for their excellent care and the attention that they devote to the needs of patients (for more information: see www.anthromed.de). The use of mistletoe as an essential medicine in the treatment of cancer is especially widespread. Mistletoe therapy augments conventional medical treatment (as studies have shown) by improving the quality of life and reducing the need for pain killers.

Patients are central to the training of doctors and therapists. The patient wants to be seen and understood as an individual. The health professional therefore needs to develop his capacity for intuition and empathy, just as much as he requires an ethical standpoint and insight into the healthy development of body, soul and spirit.
